Regions:
Asia-Pacific
The Asia-Pacific region is EI’s largest in geographical terms. Due to the sheer scale of the region, the issues that EI is dealing with differ in diverse cultural, social and economic contexts. For example, in South Asia EI deals with the dual problem of child illiteracy and child labour, and with the problem of gender equity and HIV/AIDS.
In Central Asia, EI is helping affiliates to address issues arising from the liberalisation of the national economies and education for all.
In Southeast Asia, EI along with its member organizations works to better organise on union issues including leadership and promote human and trade union rights.
In Northeast Asia, EI has been assisting teachers and other education workers to strengthen their organisations and protect and promote their fundamental freedom to form and join trade unions. In the Pacific, EI’s affiliates are working on the right to education of indigenous peoples, education for all and the fight against the commercialisation of education. In total, EI has 76 affiliates in 36 countries and territories in the region.
