Jerry Bartlett taught rural science and special educational needs in secondary schools between 1969 and 1983. Throughout this period he served NASUWT as an elected officer at local and federation level. Jerry Bartlett was an active Trades Council Secretary and was elected to the Executive of the Regional Trades Union Congress in 1982. Between 1983 and 1992 he was employed as a full-time official of the National Union of Public Employees organising workers in education, local government, the National Health Service and the water industry. Jerry Bartlett returned to NASUWT as National Legal Officer in 1992 and was appointed to the post of Assistant General Secretary in 1997.
In 2004 Jerry was appointed as Acting Deputy General Secretary. In 2005 he was appointed to the post of Deputy General Secretary.
Jerry Bartlett was elected to an open seat on the Executive Board of Education International at their World Congress in July 2004 and re-elected in July 2007.
