Yasuo Morikoshi has been a member of the EI Executive Board since 2004.
Born in 1947 in Japan, Yasuo graduated with a bachelor's degree and commenced his career as an art teacher in a junior high school from 1970 till 1996. From the very beginning of his teaching career, Yasuo was active in protecting the rights of his fellow teachers in the Iwate prefecture, located in the north of Japan.
In 1996 he became a full-time activist in teacher unions' work. He was General Secretary (1996-1999), then President (1999-2004) of the Iwate Teacher's Union. Yasuo's excellent leadership qualities and his dynamism led to his being appointed as the President of the Japan Teachers' Union (JTU) in 2004. Yasuo is also a member of the Executive Board of the Japan Trade Union Confederation (RENGO) and the Vice President of its International Board.
