Jorge PAVEZ URRUTIA (Latin America)

Jorge PAVEZ URRUTIA

Jorge PAVEZ URRUTIA represents the Latin America Region on the Executive Board of Education International. He is the President of the Chilean teacher organisation, "Colegio de Profesores de Chile" (CPC), and a State Professor of Spanish at the "Instituto Pedagógico" (Teaching Institute), University of Chile.

Born in 1943 in Santiago, Jorge has 30 years of experience in secondary education, in various public and private education establishments.

After reading Psychology at the University of Chile in 1981, Jorge has never stopped his academic activities in education research. He currently works as a researcher for the "Programa Interdisciplinario de Investigaciones en Educación" (Interdisciplinary Programme for Research in Education – PIIE) specialising in ethnography and advanced teacher training, apart from acting as the Chair of Educational Psychology at the School of Psychology at the University of Chile, as well as Consultant to the "Instituto de Perfeccionamiento" (Advanced Teacher Training Institute) for the CPC.

Jorge's experience in teacher union activities began in 1978 under the dictatorship. He was the founder of the teacher union, "Asociación Gremial de Educadores de Chile" (AGECH) and was its president from 1982-1986. He was also one of the founding members of the Chilean trade union confederation, "Central Unitaria de Trabajadores" (CUT) in 1989 and is member of its National Executive Board till today.

Jorge's involvement in international education projects are numerous. He participated in the development of teacher training material in a project coordinated by UNESCO from 1993-1994. A year later, he also participated in another UNESCO project on "Further training in educational management". Jorge's research activities at the PIIE also involved him in various projects concerning education in the Latin American region.
