African workshop focuses on gender mainstreaming
The Pan-Africa Teachers’ Centre (PATC) and EI African regional office (EIRAF) have joined UNESCO, UNICEF and several progressive regional and international organisations in coordinating a project to develop, print, validate and pilot a UNESCO guide on gender mainstreaming containing 10 modules to be used in Teacher Training Institutions (TEIs) in Africa. This Guide for Gender Mainstreaming in the TEIs aims at making teacher trainers and trainees more gender-sensitive and ready to promote gender equality in their learning institutions, community and society.
A UNESCO workshop, involving TEI lecturers and administrators, senior officials from Ghana’s Ministry of Education, UNESCO and EIRAF representatives, education specialists, and tertiary educators from 10 African states, was held in Accra, Ghana, from 16-20 December, to review and improve the guide.
“We commend UNESCO for organising this seminar,” PATC Executive Director and EIRAF staff member Peter Mabande said. “We will work with affiliates to develop this guide enabling education services and systems in Africa to successfully implement and mainstream gender equality in learning institutions and society.”
This initiative to ensure that Teacher Training Institutes in Africa include gender-sensitive content and approaches in teachers’ learning materials will be addressed during the second EI world women’s conference, taking place in Dublin, Republic of Ireland April 7th-9th. The conference theme is Women in Trade Unions and in Education: from words to action, and the topics of teacher training & professional development, and the use of gender-sensitive teaching materials to combat stereotypes and promote gender equality, will be taken up during break-out sessions at the conference.
