Jan EASTMAN (Deputy General Secretary)

Jan EASTMAN

Jan Eastman became Deputy General Secretary of EI in 2006, with responsibility for human rights, including trade union and equality rights, as well as development cooperation, solidarity and assistance programs.

A native of Tasmania, Jan holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in Education. She taught secondary school English and Social Studies in British Columbia, Canada, for three decades, and specialized in education of students with learning disabilities. Jan also taught as a faculty associate in teacher education at Simon Fraser University.

Throughout her career, Jan has dedicatd herself to building the union movement within the teaching profession. She has held elected and staff union positions at the local, provincial, national and international levels.

Specifically, she served on the executive committee of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation from 1987-96, and was 2 nd Vice President from 1994-96. Jan was elected to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation in 1988 and served until 1999. She was elected Vice-President in 1995 and served as President of the CTF, representing 215,000 teachers across Canada, from 1997-99. Jan also served on the Executive Board of Education International from 1998-2001, and chaired the Status of Women committee. Until 2005, Jan was on staff in professional development and field service for the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation.
