United States UUP

The 28,000 women and men of United University Professions (UUP), the United States' largest higher education union, rank gender equity in pay and performance evaluation as one of their highest priorities. UUP is actively engaged on a number of fronts in an effort to eradicate gender disparity in the State University of New York (SUNY) system.
UUP, for example, has jointly sponsored the development of a manual for people in higher education interested in conducting their own salary studies, called Paychecks: A Guide for Conducting Salary Equity Studies for Higher Education Faculty. The second edition of Paychecks is available for purchase from the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) website (www.aaup.org). UUP is currently conducting a statistical analysis of gender equity on the twenty nine SUNY campuses (and the New York State Theatre Institute) on which UUP acts as a collective bargaining agent. This analysis will be used by the UUP Negotiations Committee to formulate demands for the upcoming round of contract negotiations.
In the past, similar analyses resulted in millions of dollars of wage enhancements for women and minority academic and professional faculty. UUP will be conducting a training workshop where UUP activists will be trained to identify and mitigate gender disparities at campus and individual department level. Following the workshop, teams of UUP activists will carry this message to their colleagues on the twenty nine campuses represented by UUP.
