USA AFSCME

In the USA “state comparable worth legislation” in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, San Jose and California has made it possible for equal value claims to be lodged. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) has had a number of successes in negotiating over $1 billion in pay equity adjustments for thousands of workers in low-paid female jobs, such as clerical workers, nurses, librarians, and health and social care workers. AFSCME won the first successful pay equity strike in San Jose in California in 1981. In Los Angeles clerical workers and librarians negotiated $12 million in pay increases and in the state of Minnesota pay equity adjustments of $33.4 million were implemented over four years. The union has been at the forefront in lobbying for improved legislation, advising on job evaluation strategies, and educating and informing members of pay equity issues.
