Alfonso Cepeda Salas began his career as a teacher in a rural community and has taught in public schools in primary, secondary, and higher education. He has a long history of union work that began in his native Coahuila, in the north of Mexico.
In 2018 he was elected General Secretary of the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación of Mexico. Among the policies he has promoted during his term in office are job security for education workers and the fight for decent pensions.
