Mary Metcalfe

Mary Metcalfe is Professor of Practice in the School of Public Management, Governance & Public Policy at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Mary first taught as an unqualified teacher in 1974 in the field of remedial reading. She worked in remedial education, and then teacher education. She was involved in anti-apartheid work in South Africa, and worked on the development and consultation on education policy for the ANC. After the democratic elections in 1994, she was appointed as the Provincial Minister for Education in Gauteng from 1994 – 1999. She was Head of the School of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand from 2005 to 2009. She is currently leading PILO which supports the Improvement of Learning Outcomes across the system.
