Davanand Sinanan joined the Teaching Service in Trinidad and Tobago in 1989 having completed a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Botany at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine campus. As a secondary school science teacher he also found time to be actively involved in his community. In 1993 he completed his postgraduate Diploma in Educational Administration and in 2007 he went on to complete a Master Degree in Educational Leadership, both at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine campus. By 1998 owing to his passion to speak out on behalf of the rights of others, he was elected Staff Representative at his school. From there he rose steadily through the ranks of his district structure until he was elected First Vice President of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) in 2010. At present he holds the position of President. His passion and commitment as a teacher earned him the title of Teacher of the Year in 2009. A staunch advocate for social justice and equity, he is an active participant in the Joint Trade Union Movement in Trinidad and Tobago. He currently holds the substantive position of Principal of the Palo Seco Secondary School. He has attended numerous national and international conferences on education, earning himself a reputation as a strong and respected voice on education matters. As a trade union leader he has always been able to skilfully navigate the road between diplomacy and militancy as he strives to ensure the best possible terms and conditions of employment for the teachers of Trinidad and Tobago. He maintains strong ties with his extended family network drawing on them for support as someone who firmly believes in the philosophy of selfless service to his fellow man.
