The European Union has suspended negotiations with Switzerland on the participation in EU education exchange programmes, such as Erasmus+ and the Horizon 2020 research programme, because of the imminent introduction of quotas to community workers approved in a referendum last week.

EI’s national affiliates, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA), have condemned trade union leaders’ arrests during marches to demand a vote on comprehensive immigration reform in their country.

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), one of EI’s national affiliates, has called on the US House of Representatives to adopt legislation initiating a comprehensive immigration reform.

The EI delegation attending the Informal Interactive Hearings on International Migration and Development at the United Nations (UN) called for the protection and promotion of migrant workers’ rights.

Earlier this week, a U.S. federal court in Los Angeles ordered a recruitment agency to pay US$4.5 million in damages to 350 Filipino teachers. The teachers, recruited as part of a guest worker programme, had been forced into exploitive contracts after arriving in the United States.

EI joined forces with other global unions to call for a rights-based approach to the governance and management of migration. This call was made at the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), held in Port Louis, Mauritius, from 19 to 22 November 2012.
