Jamaica: Teachers say no to govt’s wage offer
EI affiliate the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) has rejected the government's latest salary offer.
JTA President Ruel Reid described the latest improvements to the salary offer as woefully inadequate. Reid says officials of the organisation will meet to decide on a deadline for the government to present what he called an acceptable offer.
Reid says the JTA, which represents more than 20,000 public school teachers, will be mounting pressure on the government because it wants to sign the new wage and fringe benefits agreement by the middle of June.
The JTA has already stated that it does not intend to participate in Monday's signing of the successor agreement to the Public Sector Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
While not objecting to the principles of the MOU, the JTA says it cannot enter the pact until it reaches an agreement on the salary issue.
