Palestinian teachers to strike over unpaid wages
The General Union for Palestinian Teachers (GUPT), an EI affiliate, has announced that it will start an open-ended strike on 2 Sep, the first day of the school year, over unpaid wages.
Palestinian civil servants, including 40,000 teachers, have not received their salaries since March 2006 when the Hamas-led government took power following election victory.
The GUPT demands an immediate payment of the salary arrears and the pledge that future salaries will be received on time.
EI has issued a letter of support to its affiliate, reminding the Palestinian authorities that teachers should be paid for carrying out their duties.
