Portugal: National demonstration against law that threatens collective bargaining
On July 12th, public servants will take to the streets of Lisbon to protest against recent measures taken by the Portuguese government with a view to undermining labour rights.
According to a press release issued by FENPROF, one of the three EI members in Portugal, the measures include a law that would restrict freedom of association currently being discussed by the National Assembly. The law is to be approved on July 18th.
One of the measures that concerns the Portuguese trade union movement is the limitations to be imposed on collective bargaining, for the law establishes individual contracts for public servants.
Public sector organizations have denounced that the new legislation should have been discussed with unions, in attention to the country’s constitution.
