Millions participate in Global Action Week
Midway through Global Action Week 2008, events and celebrations are continuing apace.
While it will be some time before the record of the World’s Biggest Lesson is confirmed, early reports of yesterday’s global event look positive.
The Bangladeshi coalition estimates over one million participants, while in Cambodia even the King went back to school for the day! Further activities planned for today and tomorrow are set to ensure that this year’s Global Action Week will finish as strongly as it started. In Niger, publicity during today’s final football match of the Peace Cup will carry the theme of education rights to a large audience. The Moroccan National Education Union (SNE) has a full programme of artistic and cultural events planned in Khouribga and Béni-mellal. Meanwhile in Lebanon, a Grand Ceremony at midday today will take stock of the World’s Biggest Lesson. In Canada, the campaign continues into the future. On Monday 28 April, a Learning Forum around the theme ‘Education for Children in Conflict Affected States’ is to be hosted by the Canadian Global Campaign for Education coalition. Réjean Parent, President of the Union Federation of Quebec (CSQ), voiced union support of the programme of activities. "During Global Action Week we take the opportunity to ask Canada to prioritise Education for All on the international aid agenda and to fulfil the commitments promised in the UN," Parent said.
