Greater global effort needed to achieve 2010 goal on HIV/AIDS
One of the highlights of the United Nations High Level Meeting on AIDS held in New York on 10 - 11 June was the presentation of the progress report on the implementation of the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the 2006 Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS.
Based on information provided by 147 member states on progress in the response to HIV, the report comes two years before the target date for achieving universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.
The report provides an overview of the progress made on issues such as young people’s knowledge of HIV, women and the epidemics, the availability of treatment and the situation of children orphaned by HIV. While recognising that progress in the response to HIV is evident in many regions, emphasis is made on the need to scale-up international efforts in order to achieve the goals set for 2010.
Education International is particularly concerned with the fact that less than 40 per cent of people aged 15 to 24 have accurate knowledge regarding HIV, which is well below the 95 per cent goal established by UN member states in the 2006 Political Declaration. EI members continue to advocate for school-based HIV education through the EFAIDS Programme.
EI encourages its members to review the reports submitted by national governments. If you wish to receive your country report or the UN Progress Report, please write to [email protected].
