Seminar at Cambridge University explores the future of the teaching profession
Teacher quality and the development of the teaching profession came under the microscope at a gathering of internationally renowned education policy experts at the University of Cambridge on 16 and 17 February.
More than 50 participants - academics, researchers, policy makers, and teachers - discussed threats and opportunities, the implications of the measurement of teaching, and strategies for the future of the teaching profession as they explored research and policy around teaching.
New research
The participants also had the opportunity to get a first impression of a new research study written by Professor John MacBeath entitled "The Future of the Teaching Profession". The study was commissioned by the EI Research Institute and will be released to the general public later this month.
The outcomes of the seminar will inform the future of teacher policy generally as well as research on it, such as the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS). It will also contribute to the upcoming International Summit of the Teaching Profession, which will take place in New York in March 2012.
The seminar was organised by the Faculty of Education of Cambridge University, Education International (EI), the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and funded by the Open Society Foundations.
