Framing Education for the Public Good
EI is organising a Conference of affiliates in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries, in London UK, from 29-30 January. The purpose of the conference is to give affiliates the opportunity to meet on an informal basis to consider key issues affecting education and teacher union organisations in OECD countries.
Under the theme “Framing Education for the Public Good”, the conference will be organised around a series of plenaries, panels and break-out sessions designed to enable representatives to have the best possible opportunities for discussion.
Key speakers will include, for the OECD, Andreas Schleicher, OECD Deputy Director, DG-Education, and Michael Davidson, Acting Head of the OECD’s Early Childhood and Schools Division.
Frances O’Grady, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, Randi Weingarten, Chair of the EI/OECD Advisory Committee, and Professor Fernando Reimers, Director of the International Education Policy program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will be among EI’s speakers.
The second day will enable EI affiliates to discuss EI priorities. Planned foci include: “Challenges and Opportunities facing Education in OECD countries”; “the Financial Crisis”; “Privatisation”; “the Future of the Teaching Profession”; “Adult Skills and Higher Education”; “Supporting Disadvantaged Students”; and “Evaluation and Assessment”.
“This important conference will provide a vital opportunity for EI affiliates to explore policy developments and common issues at a time of great political and economic turbulence globally,” said EI General Secretary Fred van Leeuwen.
