EI joins 40.000 on the streets demanding a new path for Europe
The message from Brussels today was clear as thousands took to the streets in protest: Austerity is not working! Trade union delegations from all over Europe gathered in Europe’s capital to denounce the fact that over 26 million Europeans are unemployed - 10 million more than in 2008. The situation for young people is even worse: 7.5 million young Europeans are neither in work, nor in education or training.
“Our message is simple, and one which EU leaders do not want to hear – that their policies for dealing with the financial crisis are not enough, and have caused a mounting social and economic crisis. Our message is that austerity is not working.” said Bernadette Ségol, general secretary of ETUC.
EI joins battle against austerity
EI and its European regional organisation, ETUCE, have joined the ranks of the demonstrators to express their dissatisfaction with the economic situation and the policies being pursued. “The ETUCE will not stop to denounce the dramatic effects of the on-going financial and economic crisis, severely harming the education sector. In our view, the 2014 European Parliament elections are the greatest democratic opportunity to change the course of European austerity policies and to say “no” to its dramatic dismantling effects on social rights.”, said Martin Romer, European director of ETUCE.
