Public invited to help shape future global education policies

published 14 November 2014 updated 28 November 2014

As part of a new initiative, members of the general public have the chance to feed their ideas into the post-2015 global education agenda, helping to shape the process of monitoring the next development framework.

The public will have their say from 17 Nov. to 30 Jan. 2015 through an online consultation launched by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) as the international community counts down to the post-2015 global development agenda.

EI invites its affiliates to take part in the consultation. Many affiliates have taken an active interest in the Post-2015 process, as also shown in EI's Unite for Quality Education campaign.

“There are a number of initiatives underway that aim to develop a new education goal and targets that can be incorporated within the broader post-2015 development framework,” said Hendrik van der Pol, Director of the UIS. Van der Pol explained that “the next challenge lies in identifying indicators to monitor these targets,” specifically a way to measure the progress of the targets.

These indicators were proposed by a Technical Advisory Group, or TAG, under the guidance of the UIS, which includes members from the Education for All Global Monitoring Report, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), UNESCO, UNICEF, and the World Bank. Its proposal, drawing on the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals(OWG), the Muscat Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, can be downloaded here.

Public consultation

The consultation is open to everyone who wishes to have their say included in the process.

“We want to reach anyone with an interest in education,” van der Pol said. “We are encouraging everyone to discuss, evaluate, and comment on the proposed indicators, suggest new ones, or provide advice on how to move forward in implementing them.”

At the end of the consultation, comments will be published online. In addition, a report will be produced and used by the TAG to submit a final proposal on post-2015 education indicators to the World Education Forum in Incheon, Korea, from 19-22 May 2015. This document will also lay the foundations for further discussions at the next UN General Assembly in September 2015.
