Korea: EI promotes teacher inclusion at World Education Forum
A high level delegation from Education International will advocate for a bolder stance on Education for All at the World Education Forum in Incheon, South Korea from 19-21 May.
The World Education Forum (WEF) is the world’s most important conference on education and this event in Incheon is organised by UNESCO and hosted by the Korean Government. It will be a landmark in education policy, coming as it does before the adoption of new development goals in September.
More than 1500 stakeholders, decision-makers, and activists will meet at the Incheon Songdo Convensia center near Seoul, including a high level delegation of 25 from Education International (EI). Their objective is to reflect on the Education for All (EFA) goals that were set in Jomtien, Thailand, 25 years ago, and define a new education agenda for the coming 15 years.
EI delegation
While acknowledging the relative success of some of the EFA targets, EI will deliver a strong message at the WEF: the challenges are still pressing and most of the EFA goals have not been met. Without the active participation of teachers in the decision-making processes, any new programme is likely to follow the same path.
EI’s delegation will be led by EI President Susan Hopgood. She will participate in the Forum alongside General Secretaries and Presidents of national education unions as well as EI regional coordinators.
EI’s presentation of its assessment of the EFA goals will highlight the importance of the involvement of teachers in policy making. Its recommendations on teacher inclusion are derived from a study based on extensive research, consultation of teachers, and a worldwide survey of more than 14,000 education workers.
