Every year, Education International (EI) marks the World Day against Child Labour (WDACL) celebrated on 12 June. EI encourages education unions to organise public activities showing the commitment of teachers and education support personnel to eradicating child labour and promoting quality public education for all children.

New Resource Manual on Child Labour

Over the years, EI has developed educational campaign material that may be used globally to undertake activities around child labour issues. In collaboration with the Programme for the Elimination of Child Labour of the International Labour Organisation (ILO-IPEC), EI is now launching a new Resource Manual "Teachers and Education Unions: Ending Child Labour".

EI and the ILO-IPEC have joined forces to prepare this new learning Resource Manual for teachers, education workers and their unions engaged in the struggle against child labour. The Resource Manual was developed as one of the tools to enhance the response of education unions in tackling child labour. The Manual acknowledges the continued scourge of child labour, the failure to achieve quality education for all as one of the most important contributing factors and the important roles that unions and teachers can play in helping to resolve these issues. It is designed as a tool that can be used by education unions and by teachers according to their responsibilities. The Manual is the product of on-going cooperation between EI and the ILO-IPEC. It has been developed through a collaborative process between education unions and other key stakeholders.

ILO Red Card to Child Labour

To mark the International World Day against Child Labour on 12 June - which will coincide with the opening of the Football World Cup in Brazil this year - the ILO will launch the #RedCard to Child Labour campaign.  The campaign will be launched worldwide with an original song written and recorded by several major artists who are supporting the cause. EI invites its member organisations to join the ILO’s Red Card to Child Labour campaign by signing up for the ILO Thunderclap social media event.

EI Campaign: One Hour against Child Labour

EI encourage its member organisations to use the campaign material developed for the campaign‘One hour against child labour’ that was initiall launched in 2012, in collaboration with the Programme for the Elimination of Child Labour of the International Labour Organisation( ILO-IPEC).

The educational and interactive campaign material includes an activity and a poster which have been translated in several languages and which are available for download on this webpage (see belowl).

With this material, EI invites teacher unions, their members and students to undertake activities around child labour issues. The‘One hour against child labour’ activity can be undertaken in schools, classrooms, staff rooms, union offices and union meetings. This activity is to be considered as a starting point for a year-long involvement in the fight against child labour at various levels – at individual level, in unions, classrooms, communities, as well as at national and global levels.

The objective is to sensitise teachers and students to the issue of child labour and to encourage them to take action at various levels throughout the year.
