Iran: calls for support of jailed education union leader made around the world
Education International joins in the Amnesty International “Write for Rights” Appeal for Iranian education unionist Esmail Abdi.
Maths teacher EsmailAbdi, leader of the Tehran branch of the Iranian Teachers’ Trade Association, was convicted of national security offences in February 2016 after organising peaceful protests.
Given a six-year prison sentence, he was released on temporary leave on 25 June 2017 following a hunger strike and after making a large bail payment. However, he has now been recalled to prison to continue his sentence.
