Yohannes Benti Chokorso

Yohannes Benti is President of the Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA). A former secondary school chemistry teacher who joined the teaching profession in November 1992, Yohannes has been a member of ETA since then. He joined the leadership of ETA as a Secretary at District level in 1995 where he served for three years after which he was elected a Chairperson at the District level. He then served for another three years there before being elected as President of the branch office, Oromia region. After serving for three years, he was elected Deputy President of ETA at head office in July 2003 after which he becomes president of ETA in July 2008. Having served as a member of the Education International Africa Region Committee for four years representing Zone 5, he was elected to the Executive Board of Education International at the World Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand in July 2019.

He has served in different capacities in different civil society organisations. For example he is serving as General Secretary of the Ethiopian Civil Society Coalition, as Executive Committee member of the Ethiopian Civil Society Organisations Council and formerly served as a member of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union, the civil society organ of the Union.

In terms of training, he holds BSc in Chemistry, Bachelor of Laws and earned an MA in Educational Planning and Management. He also holds PhD in Education Policy and Leadership. He is trained in Advocacy and Citizen Engagement, a certificate program at Coady International Institute in Canada.
