Dominican Republic: An Ultimatum for the Government on Quality Education
A delegation from Education International Latin America participated in the massive rally for quality public education called by member organisation ADP.
The demonstration, which took place this past August 22nd, coincided with the sub-regional meeting of EILA's network of women workers in education for Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic and was attended by over 20,000 teachers from all over the Dominican Republic. It was called for by the Asociación Dominicana de Profesores (ADP) and supported by ANPROTED and FAPROUASD.
Improving the Education System
Demands are multiple and varied, ranging from equitable teacher salaries at the basic and intermediate levels to increased salaries for retirees and pensioners. Other demands include a more humane extended school day, completion and/or repair of schools, respect for the qualifications threshold of the competition, and completion of performance evaluations. In addition, the organisers of the demonstration request that payments be made for the incentive programmes, which many teachers have been expecting for over two years.
The ADP, a member organisation of Education International, has decided to give the Minister of Education seven days to give a favourable response, or else the demonstrations will continue.
Education International's international delegation joined the demonstrations and expressed its solidarity with its national member organisations in their just demands.
