Education International is saddened by the news of the death of Gareth Young, deputy general secretary of the NASUWT–The Teachers’ Union, on 14 December.

Gareth Young was a much-valued colleague at the NASUWT and the union is “still struggling to come to terms with this news”, said NASUWT general secretary Dr Patrick Roach. “It is truly devastating.”

Recognising Young’s contributions to the education sector in the United Kingdom, Roach added that “Gareth was a proud ambassador for teachers and quality education … our sadness reflects the loss we feel today and that is also felt by Gareth’s family and by the NASUWT”.

He added that Young was working closely with Education International “as the NASUWT lead official on international matters, building on his previous contributions to Education International”.

Education International: Valuable contribution will be missed

Education International’s general secretary, David Edwards, echoed Roach’s words, stressing Young’s valuable contribution to Education International’s Research Network, to the International Summit on the Teaching Profession, and to the Education Solidarity Network.

“Gareth’s contribution to the future of the international trade union movement and to the cause of teachers will be missed,” he said.

Education International expresses its heartfelt condolences to Gareth Young’s relatives, friends, and the education community.
