The National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), EI’s member organisation in Mexico, has achieved a wage increase of 3.9 percent, and 1.8 percent in benefits, for all education workers.

The head of the Ministry of Public Education, Delfina Gómez Álvarez, and SNTE national leader, Alfonso Cepeda Salas, announced the results of the negotiation of the 2021 Demand Sheet delivered by the SNTE: 3.9% increase in salary and 1.8% in benefits of teachers of Basic, Special and Initial Education, Higher Secondary Education and Higher Education, as well as for the Education Support and Assistance Personnel from all over the country.

Cepeda Salas pointed out that more than 430 thousand teachers have obtained job security, and that the union will continue to fight for these workers.

Gómez Álvarez said that the national teachers have earned the appreciation and affection of the Mexican people, especially mothers and fathers with school-age children, since they have found that they are irreplaceable. She called on the union representation to join forces, to face the next return to in-person classes, in a coordinated, cautious and safe manner. "As never before, the national educational authorities and the teaching profession are united for the cause of education, whose priority is to maintain the health of all members of our school communities," she said.

At the signing event, it was also announced that at the end of May the vaccination process for educational personnel in Mexico will conclude. To date, almost 2 million teachers have been vaccinated in record time.
