ISTP 2021: Learning from the past, looking toward the future
The official report of the International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) demonstrates the full engagement of Education International member organisations in working as equal partners with governments on policies supporting teachers in the exercise of their profession.
This year’s edition of the ISTP took place between 19 and 21 October. Hosted by the United States, the summit brought together Education Ministers and teacher union leaders in OECD countries to strengthen policy dialogue in education and support the teaching profession.
Highlighting the relevance of the summit, David Edwards, Education International General Secretary, stated: “While the pandemic remains an ever-present threat, education jurisdictions are planning and implementing their recovery. Teachers and school communities have shown enormous resilience, constantly innovating in order to educate and protect students. Many countries have continued to learn from each other. They also understand that positive educational changes and improvements cannot be embedded without partnership between governments and teacher unions.”
Key issues such as teacher and student well-being and the need to shift the curriculum and its assessment towards the needs of the Whole Child where addressed and the majority of country delegations committed themselves to enhancing teacher well-being over the coming year.
