Happy New Year from the world’s educators!

published 5 January 2022 updated 1 February 2022

As we welcome 2022, Education International and its member organisations restate their unwavering commitment to protect and promote the rights of teachers and education support personnel and ensure free quality public education for all across the world.

“As always, we will draw strength from our global solidarity to build resilient, sustainable, just and peaceful societies around the globe,” stressed Education International’s General Secretary, David Edwards.

Ongoing fight against COVID-19

In 2022, we will continue to mobilise across our membership and work together with partners such as UNESCO, the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, and the OECD in order to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on both educators and their students.

We will also continue to support vaccine equity as the only long-term solution to the pandemic. We will work with our member organisations and partners across civil society to ensure that Covid-19 vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments are accessible to all. Together, we will advocate for the adoption of the temporary waiver of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) at the World Trade Organization.

Teach for the Planet

Our work to ensure quality climate change education for all will continue in the new year.

2021 saw the successful launch of the Teach for the Planet campaign and our Manifesto on Quality Climate Change Education for All. The new year offers new opportunities for educators and their unions to stand up for the planet and for their students and inspire communities to action. We will work to ensure that climate education, based on science and with a civic action focus, becomes as fundamental as teaching reading and writing.

4th EI World Women’s Conference

In mid-June 2022, Education International member organisations will come together online for our 4th World Women’s Conference.

This year’s title and theme are “Using Women's Power for Change: A Festival of Ideas, Experiences and Strategies to Advance Gender Equality in and through Education”. Building on the success and learning from previous editions, the 2022 event will offer member organisations a space for reflection, information sharing and exchange, and strategising across regions to advance gender equality in and through education.

“As always, we will draw strength from our global solidarity to build resilient, sustainable, just and peaceful societies around the globe.”

Free quality public education for all

The fight against the privatisation and commercialisation in and of education is one of our top priorities in 2022. We will continue to champion the fundamental right to education and advocate for free quality public education for all.

As always, we are fully committed to defend democracy and human rights, including trade union rights, wherever and whenever they are threatened.
