As 2022 comes to a close, we look back on a year of challenges, but also a year of solidarity and hope as we continue to work together to make sure quality public education is accessible to all in every country around the world.

Bidding farewell to a busy 2022 in the education sector

In 2022, Education International (EI) stood up for democracy, human and trade union rights and for truth and peace. We stood up for teachers and education support personnel demanding better pay and working conditions and the respect all education workers deserve.

EI advocated for the teaching profession at the global level and took every opportunity to make sure the voice of teachers was heard by policy makers, governments, and international organisations.

Most importantly, EI’s member organisations came together in solidarity with colleagues, allies and committed unionists from every corner of the planet to continue to build a better world and a sustainable future for their students and communities.

In 2023 we will continue to ensure quality public inclusive education, strengthen education unions, and stand up to protect and promote the rights of teachers and education support personnel (ESP).

Launch of a new campaign

EI will launch a new campaign on the International Day of Education, the 24th of January. This campaign will support member organisations in their fight against austerity programmes and budget cuts and build a consensus for fundamental change; a transformation based on improving the environment for professional teachers.

The three pillars of this campaign are:

1. Investing in public quality education, investing in the profession.
2. Confronting, stopping, and reversing the path of privatisation and trade in education.
3. Transforming the narrative for quality public education.

EI World ESP Conference

The EI World ESP Conference will be held from 16 -17 May. It will focus on building union power to defend the rights and status of ESP.

The conference will aim to:

• Continue to build union power to defend the rights and improve the status of ESP, building on the first ESP conference in 2018.
• Offer a platform for sharing ideas and experiences relating to enhancing ESP working conditions.
• Highlight strategies for challenging privatisation and deteriorating employment conditions for ESP.

9th EI World Congress

From 11-13 July, EI will hold its 9th World Congress online: “Growing our unions, elevating our professions, defending democracy” – ties together the efforts to enhance the status of the profession and strengthen the education union movement with the defense for democratic values, principles and systems. It places the teaching profession and its autonomy, and the role and rights of trade unions at the heart of a well-functioning democracy, and recognises the contribution of education unions to democratic societies.

Ongoing Teach for the Planet campaign

In 2023, EI and its affiliates will continue to ensure quality climate change education for all. Educators and their unions will relentlessly stand up for the planet and for their students and inspire communities to action. They will raise awareness about the Education International’s Manifesto on Quality Climate Change Education for All and work to ensure that climate education, based on science and with a civic action focus, becomes as fundamental as teaching reading and writing.
