Description
Afghanistan is a country with serious problems such as conflict, deep-rooted poverty, and women's human rights issues. Three years have passed since the political upheaval in 2021, but girls still cannot receive education above the secondary level.
JTU supports SVA which operates "Children's Library" in Afghanistan. The children who are no longer able to go to school also visit the libraries, where they have the opportunity to learn through the various activities that take place there. Learning opportunities outside of public education are currently an extremely important form of education in Afghanistan. Activities at the libraries include crafts, drawing, and sewing. Sewing is an important skill, especially for girls/women in Afghanistan, to support their future household finances and livelihoods. Special classes have been opened for children, who are not able to attend public school, to provide opportunities to learn reading, writing, math, among others.
Objectives
- To provide sustainable educational opportunities for children who use libraries in Afghanistan.
Activities
- Book lending and reading activities:
The Children's Library provides an environment where children can freely read picture books and books. We also provide lending services, and approximately 1,500 books are borrowed each month.
- Cultural Activities:
The Library hold craft and drawing classes for children who visit the children's library.
- Sewing class:
The Library holds a sewing class mainly for girls where they can learn sewing skills. For Afghan women, such sewing will be an important skill for supporting their households and lives in the future.
- Monthly events:
The Library organise events every month with various themes from international to traditional Afghan.
- Special classes:
The Library provides special classes for the children who cannot attend school to study reading, writing and arithmetic.
