Statement of solidarity with the education union community in Myanmar

published 28 March 2025 updated 28 March 2025

Education International stands in solidarity with our union colleagues and the education community in Myanmar in the wake of today's devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake and its powerful aftershocks. We extend our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones and express our deep concern for all those affected, particularly educators and students who were already enduring dire conditions.

The destruction caused by the earthquake, combined with the ongoing political and humanitarian crisis, makes urgent emergency relief imperative. It is critical that aid reaches all those in need, and we call on the international community to mobilise support and ensure assistance is never obstructed.

In these challenging times, EI and its member organisations worldwide reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with Myanmar’s educators and their independent union as they navigate yet another hardship. We will continue to stand by them, advocating for democracy, safety, and the right to quality education for all.

Our thoughts and solidarity also go to the people of Thailand who have been affected by the earthquake as well. Our colleagues in the Education International Asia Pacific office in Bangkok had to evacuate their building, which has been damaged, but they were thankfully unharmed.
