Resolution of the Executive Board of Education International on the attacks on public education, democracy, and union values in the United States
In response to an avalanche of authoritarian measures enacted by the Trump Administration, the Executive Board of Education International, during its 70th meeting, on 1-3 April 2025, unequivocally reaffirms its commitment to public education, inclusive democracy, and human and trade union rights in the United States and around the world.
Education International stands in solidarity with its affiliates in the United States, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers, as they stand up to defend their students, their members, their profession, and their school communities.
EI denounces
- The unprecedented and egregious cuts in the funding of critical research programmes, the assault on academic freedom, and the open threats to universities and research institutions who do not align with Trump demands, and the assault on the professional autonomy of teachers, including through book bans and the censoring of curricula.
- The ongoing attacks on public sector workers and their labour rights, and the intentional dismantling of the Department of Education and its consequences for the most marginalised.
- The termination of US international aid and funding programs to the most vulnerable communities around the world.
EI reaffirms
- That diversity, equity, and inclusion are fundamental to achieve quality education for all. Diversity, equity, and inclusion programmes create a sense of belonging for students to learn, grow, and reach their full potential in a safe and welcoming environment.
- That racism, discrimination, and marginalisation of any people or groups of people, have no place in our schools or our communities.
EI calls
- On member organisations around the world to show their support for members in the United States in their resistance to authoritarian and regressive policies, and continue their work to advance public education, human and trade union rights, and peace and democracy.
- On education institutions to reject the pressure to eliminate or weaken their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programmes and to resist further attacks on their academic freedom.
EI resolves
- To develop an action plan to organise a collective response to the attacks from the far right on core democratic principles and values; multilateralism; the rule of law and diversity, equity and inclusion.
