Education International Asia-Pacific launches calls for quality climate education for all and demands increased funding for education
Education International Asia-Pacific (EIAP) is organising a series of impactful activities from 28 April to 3 May 2025 in Kathmandu, Nepal calling for quality climate education for all and urging governments to increase public investment in education and teachers.
The initiative kicks off with the 3rd Educators Stand for Climate Justice and Just Transition conference, providing a space for South Asian education unions to integrate climate justice and just transition into their union’s political work. The objective is to build union power, foster solidarity, and develop collaborative strategies to advocate for quality climate education for all.
On May 1, leaders from EI member organisations across South Asia will march at the May Day mobilisation, joining workers and educators worldwide calling for governments to increase public investment in education and teachers. This mobilisation is a key action within the Go Public! Fund Education campaign, an urgent call for governments to invest in public education, — a fundamental human right and public good—and to invest more in teachers, the single most important factor in achieving quality education. The campaign also leverages the recommendations of the UN’s High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession, emphasising the importance of investing in teachers, improving their working conditions, mental health and wellbeing, ensuring better salaries, social protection as well as continuous professional development.
From May 2 to 4, EI Asia-Pacific will convene the Go Public! Fund Education Campaign Planning Meeting - South Asia, bringing together EI member organisations across the sub-region. The two day meeting provides a platform for affiliates to coordinate, refine efforts, and develop campaign strategies for the global campaign. By mobilising educators, unions, and parents worldwide, the Go Public! Fund Education urges governments to fulfil their responsibility to provide free, high-quality public education for all.
Anand Singh, Regional Director, EI Asia-Pacific highlighted Nepal as a strategic venue for this week's activities, given the country’s education challenges and vulnerability to climate change. “Hosting these campaigns in Kathmandu allows for direct engagement with South Asian education unions, and offers a vital platform for in-depth discussions and strategies. Through these initiatives, EI affiliates can address key yet urgent priorities such as improving teachers’ working conditions, promoting their well-being and professional development, and advocating for quality climate education for all,” he said.
