To operationalize the resolution adopted by the 8th E.I Asia Pacific (EIAP) Regional Conference, the regional office intends to collaborate with UNESCO Bangkok office and undertake the following project titled Teachers Unions for Inclusion: Embracing diversity and promoting safe schools.

Education International and Council of Pacific Education organised a 2-day workshop on EI theme, “Teachers Unions for Inclusion: Embracing Diversity and Promoting Safe Schools with FTA, FTU and AUSPS in Suva Fiji from 3rd to 4th December 2018. The program looked at the need to increase awareness on LGBTI issues, especially policies and existing legislation in the Fijian context. The workshop also highlighted the need to develop mechanisms to review the existing education methods and education – related materials to promote inclusive education. The unions also discussed the role of education stakeholders including teachers and their unions to uphold and protect the human rights of all the learners with focus LGBTI and SOGIE.

Goals

a) To increase awareness on LGBTI issues, especially policies and existing legislation in the national context.

  1. To develop mechanisms to review existing education methods and education-related materials to promote inclusive education
  2. To discuss the role of education stakeholders including teachers and their unions to uphold and protect the human rights of all learners with focus on SOGIE.
  3. To develop national action plan to eliminating discrimination in the education sector on the basis of SOGIE

Results

The workshop took an in-depth analysis of various provision or lack of those within the existing legal framework and the adequacy of tools that are necessary and /or available.

The workshop drew strength from several provision including the Porte Alegre Declaration on LGBT 2004.

Increased awareness of the participating Member Organisations on LGBTI issues, especially policies and existing legislation in the national context

Better understanding, acknowledgement and acceptance of gender diversity in the unions.
