Description

The inevitability of change in the Tongan education demands that FITU strategies well in order to respond effectively to various changes happening within and outside of Tonga. A one-day seminar was organised by FITU for union members, potential members and newly recruited teachers. The workshop is designed to inform union members and new teachers of their rights, SDGs – particularly SDG 4, 5 and 8 and role of teachers and their union in the implementation and monitoring of SDGs and promoting sustainable and inclusive life-long learning for all.

Goals

To counter the threat locally and implied with Human and Trade Union Rights particularly Women’s Rights

To uphold and maintain the just claims of members individually and collectively.

To recruit new members from the teaching force to the capacity of 90% of the total potential member.

To explore and discuss the role of Teacher Union (FITU) in achieving SDGs particularly Goal 4, Goal 5 and Goal 8.

To deepen awareness of members rights and obligations in context of human rights.

Activities

Workshop presentations, panel discussions, group discussions and presentation

Results

Members and teachers were empowered to raise their concerns and grievances.

Members were informed of their rights and obligations and role in the implementation and monitoring of SDGs

New members were recruited.
